The
diplomatic relations between Cuba and Guyana were
established December 8, 1972, at the level of Embassies,
in joint action assumed by Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago,
Jamaica and Barbados. On 2003 we commemorate 30
years of Cuba-Guyana diplomatic relations.
During
this period, the relationships between both countries
have been strengthening for the mutual benefits of the
peoples of Cuba and Guyana.
In
1973, Dr. Fidel Castro Ruz, President of the Council of
State and of the Government of the Republic of Cuba,
paid an official visit to Guyana. Also different
Guyana’s Head of State or/and Government visited Cuba:
Forbes Burnham (1975, 1979 y 1984); Desmond Hoyte
(1989); Bharrat Jagdeo (2000, South Summit/Havana, 2001,
official visit and 2002 Cuba-Caricom Summit). Those
visit played an important roll for the development of
the cooperation and friendship.
The
consistent practice of internationalism and solidarity
with other peoples of the world is a prime principle
of Cuban foreign policy. As an example of this,
Cuba has different mainly programs of cooperation with
many countries like: |

In the case of Guyana, on 1975 was held the First Session of the Joint Commission for Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Governments of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Cuba. The last one, the Twenty-Second Session of the Guyana/ Cuba Joint Commission was convened in Georgetown, from March 22-24,2004. This session reviewed also the progress of the work program of the Twenty-First Session, which was held in Havana, Cuba, in November 2001.
The areas of specific focus were the Health and Education. New initiatives for the intensification of technical and other forms of cooperation for the ensuing Work Program - 2004-2006 - were identified. The projects that formed part of this work program are the provision of experts to promote cultural cooperation, and post-graduate training for the Health and Education sectors . (more

A
total of 244 Guyana’s students have been formed and
graduate since 1976 until the course 2000-01 in Cuba. 92
of them correspond to Technical levels and 152 to High
Education level. At present more than one hundred
Guyana’s students are studying in Cuban centers, to
which it should be added more than 100 new students that
will be integrated to the course 2003-2004. For
more than 20 years, a Cuban Medical Brigade has been
working in Guyana to support the attention to the public
health in the country. In these moments the Cuban
Medical Brigade has 43 collaborators. (See

In
the area of trade and business exists a
mutual interest for the development of the commercial
relations between both countries In November 1998, was
held in Guyana a "Symposium about Commerce and
Investments in Cuba" with Caribbean
businessmen. On this occasion an industrial exposition
of Cuba’s export articles was showed. Many Guyana’s
businessmen have participated in different international
Fairs celebrated in Cuba, mainly in the Havana
International Fair and ExpoCaribe Fair, in Santiago de
Cuba. More details about possibilities of business
with Cuba and the Caribbean in

During
the year 2001, an agreement for the Sister City
Affiliation between the Capitals City of Havana and
Georgetown was signed by its respective Mayors, Mr.
Hamilton Green and Mr. Conrado Martínez Corona. This
agreement promotes the better understanding and
friendship between the peoples of both countries.
An other
important fact for Cuba and Guyana is that on October 6,
the 1976, children of both countries were victims of a
criminal action carried out by terrorists that provoked
the sabotage and bombing, of the Cuban Airlines plane
CUT-1201 during its fly, off the coast of Barbados. More
information and details in Terrorist
Actions against Cuba.
